Name Our Road
THE CITY OF FIFE IS GETTING A NEW ROAD
It's not often we get a new road in Fife. As part of the SR 167 expansion, a new road will connect from 20th Street East, north over the freeway, to 8th Street East. The road will be constructed in two phases. The first section, the overpass, currently is under construction. The second section between SR 99 and 8th Street will follow.
WE WANT YOUR HELP
The Fife City Council is asking for help from residents, property owners, business owners and employees to select a road name. The names below have been suggested for the new road. Once voting closes, the results of the vote will be presented to the council in January 2021. Keep an eye on upcoming city council agendas to follow the naming process.
NAMES UNDER CONSIDERATION
City Center Bypass - This road diverts traffic around the "City Center" at the intersection of Pacific Hwy and 54th Ave E.
- Before Fife was incorporated in 1957, the area was commonly referred to as Gardenville.
Gateway Road East - This road is being constructed as part of WSDOT's "Puget Sound Gateway Program" and the road will provide for a gateway into the Port of Tacoma.
Interurban Road East - A portion of this road carries the Interurban Trail over Interstate 5, where the trail continues on to connect to SR 509 and into Tacoma.
Roundabout Way - The road travels through the first two roundabouts constructed in Fife.
Wapato Way East - Wapato is the Native American word for a potato-like plant that was abundantly harvested in the marshes and bogs in the region.
