Utility Rate Increase

2024 Rate Increases for Sewer, Water & Storm Drainage Utilities

The City of Fife annually updates and implements new rates for its water, sewer and storm drainage services. These adjustments are effective January 1, 2024 and will be reflected on your March 2024 utility bill.

WhAT IT MEANS

For typical single-family residential customers within city limits, the overall increase each month will be about $10.33 based on average water usage. This will result in an increase of about $20.65 each bi-monthly billing cycle. Residential customers with higher water consumption, customers with connections outside of the city limits and commercial customers will see a somewhat higher increase.

WHy IT'S NEEDED

The City of Fife purchases wholesale water and sewer treatment services from the City of Tacoma. Every November, the City of Tacoma sets its rates for the upcoming year. For 2024, Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) raised its rates for water by 4.5% and for sewer by 8%. In addition, the recent closure of the WestRock paper mill in Tacoma resulted in a $25 million annual revenue loss for TPU resulting in an additional rate increase of 4.7%.  City staff then use that information to calculate the impact on our rates. Water and sewer rates have been indexed to increase from the previous year based upon the increase in Tacoma rates, and inflation. Storm drainage rates have been indexed to increase from the previous year based upon inflation.

Will There be utility rate increases in the future and, if so, what will they be?

Utility rates have been indexed to provide for future rate increases to address anticipated needs for the next few years. These increases are as follows:

Sewer and water rates have been indexed to increase from the previous year based upon Tacoma’s treatment cost increase and inflation, starting January 1 and each successive year thereafter.

Storm drainage rates have been indexed to increase annually. Click here for a copy of the Fife Municipal Code. The rate is expected to increase from the previous year based upon inflation, starting January 1 of each year.
